Popular Culture

Popular culture (people’s culture) is a derivative of term “culture”, specifically folklores that exists in modern societies throughout the world.  It is the social or interactive patterns of cultures and principles in society.  Popular or pop culture symbolizes culture material that people uses in their respective societies.  For example, ideas from film, news media, television, and books are converted to consumable items.

There are many reasons why an understanding and relevance of popular culture in the business environment.  One of these reasons is the fact that popular culture impacts society on a whole; it effects the way people go about their everyday living.  With this in mind, companies can observe the trends of popular culture in order to create new products; thereby influencing their profit margin.  Another reason for relevance in the business environment is that gives management the tools to better understand behavioral forms of their personnel.  In my future career, the odds are that I am going to interact with many diverse people within workplace and community.  Therefore, having an understanding of popular culture will be an enabler in assuring that I am on the path of success.

An example of a pop culture artifact is Bob Marley and his music.  I choose him because he transcends the world with his music; additionally he’s hero in his homeland of Jamaica.  He single handedly turned reggae music and Rastafarian  religion into pop culture today.  The undulations of his consummate accomplishments exude across many avenues of society such as fashion, politics, ethics, religion and philosophy.  He’s a myth and a legend of our times.
